And here are ten things men should remember when considering their health….

  1. Find a doctor you’re comfortable with, one you can discuss all your health history and concerns with.
  2. Go there. Great! You’ve found a doctor—now schedule your yearly wellness exam and keep track of any unusual changes year after year.
  3. Do some research. If you are experiencing any unusual symptoms, get informed and track symptoms to know to go to the doctor. Don’t brush off symptoms or changes—if you think they may be a sign of something more serious, schedule a visit and find out.
  4. Get that workout in (and don’t skip leg day). Keep your workouts varied to continue to strengthen and improve your body. Try cardio, strength training, and flexibility-based workouts for the best results.
  5. Eat your veggies (and your protein, and your healthy carbs). Variety is the spice of life and the key to good nutrition. So, look for a variety of fresh, unprocessed food to include in your nutrition plan.
  6. Actually, this should be NUMBER 1. Sleep is crucial to managing stress, managing weight, improving mood, and generally staying healthy. Make sure to get those zzzzs. If you’re having trouble getting enough sleep, talk to your doctor.
  7. Do a mental health check. If you have a family history of mental illness, substance abuse, or suicide, please have your doctor review your symptoms and family history.
  8. Do a sexual health check. Get tested for STDs. Practice safe sexual activities. And if your sexual desire or sexual performance changes significantly, or you are unable to get an erection, schedule a visit with your doctor.
  9. Don’t forget the prostate. 1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their life. Keep up with regular screening as it is often treatable.
  10. Have fun! Find some downtime. Take up a new hobby. Practice meditation. Find some safe, healthy ways to practice self-care in your life. Taking a few moments each day and a few hours each week to enjoy life is crucial to your overall health. So, take some time and ENJOY!
