The days are getting longer, the weather is warming up, and school is almost out! It’s ALMOST SUMMER, Y’ALL! While sometimes that means a little freedom in the scheduling, it can also mean that it’s harder to get on a consistent health and wellness plan that keeps you scheduled, organized, and on track with your goals. Keep in mind the following tips for a healthier summer.

  1. Get enough sleep. This is a hard one, especially if you have kids. More activities, vacations, and simply just staying up later because we lose track of time when it doesn’t get dark until late until the evening. A regular sleep schedule is the NUMBER ONE component to your health, energy, and weight loss. Studies have shown that you can’t “make up sleep” on the weekends by sleeping in and that in fact, trying to do so may cause more harm than good. Keep your routine steady, set alarms to remind you when it’s close to bedtime, and practice a good evening winding-down routine.
  2. Get some exercise. If you workout outside, do it in the mornings before the heat gets bad. If you want a gym membership, pick one with childcare. If you workout from home, get the littles involved. Moving your body regularly throughout the day will keep your energy up and help you sleep better at night.
  3. Stay connected. Schedule in date nights with your significant other, play dates with other families with kids, and fun activities with friends. Added bonus if these activities are not centered around food. Having time for your own social life is important and good for your mental and emotional health.
  4. Stay hydrated. Especially if you’re outside a lot. Try to drink more water throughout the day to keep an even level of hydration.
  5. Wear sunscreen. Every day. Even if you’re just outside for a few minutes. Aim for 30+ SPF and remember to reapply.
  6. Enjoy local produce. The summer is a great time to hit up the farmer’s markets for some fresh, local fruits and veggies. Produce in season tastes better, is higher in nutrients (especially if it’s local), and is more plentiful. Try a new fruit or veggie each week and make it a family affair by getting the kids to pick out something they want to try too. Food baskets from a local produce co-op is a good way to get products you would not normally try. When you get something that is new, Google it or ask friends the best way to prepare it. You’ll be surprised by the number of new things you might like!
