Be at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let every New Year find you a better man.
Starting off each New Year right is always on our mind around this time of year. We all start off with a mind set of making this New Year better than the next and that is when we start to plan our New Year’s Resolution. Whether our resolution is to make ourselves healthier by losing weight, quitting smoking/drinking alcohol, or even staying in touch with our family and friends instead of relying on social media, we all need help staying on track for the full year. Here are some tips to help yourself stick with your resolution longer and help improve your quality of life.
Do not expect overnight success with any kind of change that you are trying to make. All change is a gradual process and by not expecting it all to fall into place overnight, it will help you stay motivated to continue with your resolution the full year. Pick a resolution for yourself that will take some work on your part but is not unattainable.
Plan for mess up’s. No one is perfect and there will be days that you feel like a failure. If you plan on messing up on occasion, you will not feel so discouraged when you are not perfect and things just are not going your way. No matter how bad you mess up, get back on track the next day!
Help yourself stay on track with journaling down your day to day activities, thoughts, or even food choices. If you journal down everything, you will be able to look back and see how great you have been doing or even review the not so great days and see how you chose to cope with the mess up’s and make a strategy to get over the next one.
Plan out a support system. Let your close family members and friends know the journey that you are about to go on and have them there to support you, encourage you, and help you stay on track when you feel like stopping. Make sure that the people you choose to support you are going to be there when you need them the most and do not get mad at them if it takes a little tough love, it will all pay off in the end.
DE-STRESS! Take time for yourself to relax! Everyone needs some alone time to be with their thoughts and enjoy the quiet. We live in a time where it is go, go, go, go and we tend to put ourselves on the back burner. Set some time aside, even if it is only 15-20min once a week, to take a bubble bath, read a book, or even go on a walk to help clear your head. Too much stress puts our bodies into a state of mayhem and it will not be able to function properly if we do not do this for ourselves.
