About Dr. Adam Smith
DO, DFACOS, FASMBS
A weight loss surgery pioneer in DFW with 23 years of experience.
Dr. Adam Smith fights obesity on a personal and professional level. He is not just a bariatric surgeon, but also a patient.
After watching his patients attain success with the Lap-Band® system, in 2002 Dr. Smith chose to undergo Lap-Band® surgery to reach his own personal weight loss goals. After losing 100 pounds, Dr. Smith could relate to patients and their everyday struggles. This knowledge has helped him develop one of the most comprehensive aftercare programs in North Texas. Furthermore, Dr. Smith has led the battle on many different fronts by standing up for the rights of the obese population.
In 2010, he was appointed as a spokesperson by the Obesity Action Coalition and Allergan as part of the Voice my C.H.O.I.C.E. campaign. This campaign gave Dr. Smith the opportunity to speak to congressional representatives about his experience with obesity, as well as about the policy reforms he would like to see. He continues to advocate for obesity and, in 2013, devoted his time to serve as the President of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons. Honors such as this help Dr. Smith keep obesity, and its related diseases, in the forefront of discussions and policies amongst his peers.
Dr. Smith has been a surgical trainer for Allergan’s Lap-Band® system for a number of years. He trained many surgeons from across the country and, now, is a surgical trainer for the new iBand procedure. Dr. Smith has lectured internationally on topics such as obesity, the Lap-Band® system, as well as business and marketing techniques.
EDUCATION
Dr. Smith received his B.S. in Geology from the University of Oklahoma and attended medical school at the Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his internship at Tulsa Regional Medical Center and his residency at University of North Texas Health Science Center. He joined the faculty at UNT in 1994 where he was director of general surgery residency traning and vice chair of the department of surgery.
"Minimally insvasive surgery was relatively new in 1994 at the time I completed my general surgery residency at UNT," he explains. "The Lap-Band system wasn't even approved by the FDA yet, so Dr. Robert Snow and I travelled to another country to learn the procedure." After FDA approval in 2001, the first Lap-Band surgery in Tarrant County was performed by Drs. Smith and Snow. Dr. Smith was later trained in gastric bypass at UT Southwestern to round out the program.
Dr. Smith opened his private practice in 2004. Today, the Ultimate Bariatrics team consists of four surgeons with three office locations. "Last year we performed more than 1,000 surgeries," he states. "The majority of my patience are doing well because they have followed post-op instructions and have realistic expectations. They're staying active and have control of their lives again," he says. "It's about treating the whole person, before and after surgery." -- Living Magazine, "2021 Top Docs"
